History of Science Centre

Location: Muscat, Oman

The History of Science Centre at the German University of Technology (GUtech) serves as a bridge between the scientific achievements of the Islamic “Golden Age” and modern academic studies. Designed to merge art, science, nature, and geometry, the building symbolizes continuity and infinity, reflecting the timeless contributions of early Islamic scholars.

The architectural concept is inspired by the geometric shell pattern of the Qarawiyyin Mosque and University (AD 857)—one of the earliest and most influential centres of knowledge in the Mediterranean. The width of the geometric mesh adapts to the sun’s orientation, regulating natural light and temperature while enhancing the aesthetic identity of the structure. Additionally, the interior surfaces are inclined according to sun and wind direction to support passive cooling and efficient temperature management.

This iconic structure is equipped with a Made in Germany DEOS Building Management System, ensuring precise control of temperature and humidity across all museum areas—critical for the preservation of sensitive exhibits and maintaining a stable museum environment.

DEOS Solution Implemented:

  • Hardware: DEOS OPEN 810 Series controllers with flexible I/O configurations, used extensively throughout the facility
  • Software: DEOS OPENweb as the central management console, delivering day-to-day operational control, alarm handling, and advanced fault detection & diagnostics (FDD)

The DEOS system ensures the museum environment remains consistently protected, efficient, and aligned with the high architectural and cultural significance of the building.
