Railway Operation Headquarters & Train Control Centre

Type: Office & Rail Operations Facility
Client: Ministry of Transport, Sri Lanka
Location: Maradana, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Project Overview

The Railway Operation Headquarters and Train Control Centre at Maradana represents a major milestone in the modernization of Sri Lanka’s urban and national railway network. Located at one of the country’s busiest rail hubs, this state-of-the-art facility significantly enhances operational efficiency, passenger safety, and centralized rail network management.

The 13-storey facility, spanning approximately 212,856 square feet, accommodates modern office spaces, meeting rooms, auditorium facilities, common areas, accommodation blocks, recreational amenities, and dedicated parking for over 100 Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) personnel.

At the heart of the building is a high-tech Train Control Centre, equipped with advanced IT and operational systems for real-time monitoring and management of the national rail network.

Designed collaboratively by OENS Design Studio and MAGA’s in-house green building specialists, the project incorporates multiple sustainability-driven design strategies aimed at reducing energy consumption while establishing the building as a smart, future-ready landmark within Colombo’s skyline.

DEOS Building Management System Solution

To support the operational and sustainability objectives of this critical infrastructure, a comprehensive ”Made in GermanyDEOS Building Management System (BMS) has been implemented.

DEOS Platform Architecture

  • Hardware: DEOS OPEN Series industrial-grade native BACnet controllers

  • Automation Layer: DEOS flagship OPEN EMS controllers with flexible I/O combinations

  • Software & Visualization: DEOS OPENweb, a BACnet/SC-certified workstation SCADA platform

The OPEN EMS controllers form the core automation layer, delivering distributed control and monitoring of all critical HVAC assets. Advanced control strategies ensure systems operate continuously at optimal climatic and energy-efficient setpoints, supporting operational ease, sustainability goals, and long-term reliability.

At the enterprise level, OPENweb acts as a centralized command and control centre, providing operators with intuitive visualization, real-time system status, alarms, trends, and analytics for the entire facility.

Outcome

The integrated DEOS BMS solution delivers:

  • Reliable and precise environmental control

  • Energy optimization and reduced operational costs

  • Seamless integration of building systems

  • Centralized, intuitive operation for mission-critical facilities

This implementation establishes the Railway Operation Headquarters and Train Control Centre as a benchmark smart infrastructure project, supporting the future of rail operations in Sri Lanka through intelligent automation and sustainable design.
